University of  Science and Philosophy
Meet the NEW President of the USP, John Bonsall!

Message from the President-

To my fellow students and enlightened souls everywhere,
I would like to thank the Board of Directors of the University of Science and Philosophy for this most welcomed opportunity.  My gratitude also goes out to former President, Mr. Matthew Presti, for his tireless work effort in reviving this vital message. In 2019, under the guidance of Mr. Presti, and with a handful of dedicated students, the resurrection of Walter and Lao Russell’s work from 20 years of storage was made possible through our new Russell Museum in Waynesboro, Virginia.  May I extend an open invitation for all the world to come and visit our museum and witness these remarkable accomplishments of the Russell’s firsthand.
Having lived with and mentored under Lao Russell for two years, it has given me a greater insight to this vital message and its true purpose. What an honor it is for me to inform you of my acceptance of the position as the new President of the University of Science and Philosophy. Together, we begin this journey into the eleventh era of moving forward the Immortal Message of “The Divine Iliad” as delivered within the Russell Cosmogony. I do not have to tell you that world conditions of today are in great decline. This institution from its inception on May 2nd, 1949, has always focused on building of the character of man to enrich society. This greater understanding can be accomplished through a self-awakening process that our university’s’ curriculum achieves via our Home Study Course, in Universal Law, Natural Science and Living Philosophy. These principles, once comprehended and applied in everyday life, will further uplift one’s self and humanity to an even greater understanding of Oneness with each other and that of our Creator.
One of my favorite sayings from our co-founder Lao Russell is and I quote, “The greatest challenge for any person in life is to discover their divinity and live it.” What a wonderful experience, this awakening process by any human being to their divine self. In the balanced rhythms of classical music this experience can be greatly enriched. No greater meaning of that process can be stated than that of the Immortal Ludwig Von Beethoven himself, as to why he wrote his fifth symphony. His purpose in composing this was “To emancipate oneself by passing from the finiteness of physical living into the infinity of eternal being.” This statement brings an even greater understanding to Dr. Russell’s famous quote, that “Mediocrity is self-inflicted, genius is self-bestowed.”
It is with heart felt emotion, that this message will again reach out to the world in this eleventh hour of need. To give mankind a greater understanding of his true purpose on earth before it is too late. Mrs. Russell had a beautiful saying, “you can only have in life that which you first give.”  With your involvement, we can do this together, each of us, acting as messengers of the Light, bringing untold legions to this movement.

In Loving Service to the Message,
John Bonsall
President, USP
A century and more ahead of his time, Walter Russell, in The Secret of Light presents a unique Cosmogony, that of a universe in which Creator and Creation are proven to be a seamless, unified whole, and in which the dualism of "mind and matter" disappears.
Check out these reviews of what people are calling, "A scientific masterpiece."

________________________________________________________

"Reading The Secret of Light is an important step toward understanding both the intellectual and spiritual balances that exist in the universe. It is best to read in solitude, away from the bustle of the everyday world. As you open this book, imagine yourself at the sacred Temple of an unkown ancient religion. With trepidation you expect to discover something mysterious and possibly of great value to you. Briefly close your eyes and exhale deeply. Now you are ready to read Walter Russell's The Secret of Light." - Vladimir B. Ginzburg, Ph.D.
_________________________

"Do you want to really know the secret of the spirit world? Do you really want to know who the Creator is and your relationship to it? Read this book. It is fantastic in every way. Forget about religion and the doctrines it forces on you. This is the truth that your soul knows is true. It is heavy duty reading, take your time. This book is for the person who has studied world religion, experienced metaphysical things, searched for the truth all your life. In this, you will have found it. Fabulous book." -  Joan G. Zakrzewski

Bonsall to his new position as President of USP.  John has been a life long student of the Russell science and philosophy having lived and worked at Swannanoa Palace with Lao Russell from 1976-1977.  He was also a member of the first International Age of Character Club in Newark, DE.  John is a graduate of the University of Frostburg, Western Maryland, studied under Dr. Carey Reams and was certified in the Theory of Biological Ionization.

John was previously employed by Bluegreen Corp., a national Vacation Club providing dream vacations.  He won numerous #1 titles with Bluegreen Corp. regionally and nationally.

Hundreds of our students write us that they have been searching all their lives for what they have found within our Course.

Many have said, "I have learned more in these few months of study of your Course than I gained in years of University study."

Read these astounding reviews from students and see how lives have been changed from frustration to ecstasy through the new knowledge presented in the Home Study Course.
" I have read all sorts of books on religion, etc., to no avail. This is what I have been looking for."
Miss K.E. Rippon, Durban, South Africa
"I am 67 years old. No money invested during any time has given me as great a return as your Home Study Course."
Robert Burbur, USA
"I find your Course filling the great gap which I had hoped to be able to do for going on forty years. Its explanations and definitions of the Why and How of Meditation to God awareness and Consciousness are worth more than one may acquire in a four year course at College or University. I have not seen the likes of it in my twenty years in a Cisterian Abbey."
Brother Louis Galleti, Monastery of the Holy Spirit, Georgia
"I became so uplifted with peace and joy that I had to continually lay the pages aside to wipe the tears from my eyes."
Albert Miller, Ohio

The 100th and 150th year anniversaries of Dr. Walter Russell’s illumination and unfolding.

May 19th, 1871, Walter Bowman Russell was born into the world.  His life was an extraordinary example of working knowingly with God (Source, Mind, Light, Truth, Beauty, Creator).  His mastery of the five fine arts - architecture, music, painting, poetry and sculpting were unparalleled.

This May 19th, 2021, marks the 150th anniversary of Dr. Russell’s birth.  To coincide with this special day is also the 100th anniversary of the good Dr.’s full-on 39-day illumination, which began on May 13th, 1921.

Source - https://spaceweatherarchive.com/2020/05/12/the-great-geomagnetic-storm-of-may-1921/

This solar event caused numerous disruptions in telegraph and communications the world over.  Accounts of the event were also recorded historically in newspapers and magazines.  Dr. Russell wrote down his 39,000 words of inspiration, which he would later name “The Message of the Divine Iliad.”  He shared part of this message for the first time with the world in “The Secret of Light” (1947), in order that mankind, whom he believed to be on the verge of a cosmic awakening, would embrace this message of which he was commanded to give this many years after his revelatory experience in 1921.  The Message was later published in two volumes, “The Message of the Divine Iliad” (Volume One (1948) and Volume Two (1949).

Together, he and wife Lao Russell, founded the University of Science and Philosophy on Dec. 2nd, 1948, in order that through these two often ‘at odds’ vocations, the marriage of both would come to represent the possibilities of uniting mankind in furthering the moral movement began by the great poets, philosophers and authors of the Twilight Club back in the 1870’s.  This was to be an example of the unification of philosophy and science, which the Russell’s expressed would be a saving grace for mankind.  The Russell’s both saw the University of Science and Philosophy as the direct extension of the Twilight Club in order that this great moral movement would not disappear from the earth.

Painting of the Month:
Bubble Girl

This painting represents the rising of the feminine nature in humanity. History tells us that our proverbial fall from grace happened once we gave into the belief of good and evil and the diversionary thinking it spawns. The feminine nature will rise from the heart of humanity to grasp the essence of our divinity that will uplift all of mankind.

Painting of the Month:
THE WAVE

This painting shows many wave systems within wave systems, thus illustrating the infinite regress of the basic mechanism of creation. Two sets of large vortex whirls are clearly visible side by side with their cathode planes running horizontally through the center of the painting; these cathode base planes are oval concentric circular patterns colored blue. These cathodes are fulcrums from which lever systems are projected as pairs of cones with the cathodes as shared bases (the fulcrums) and the cone apexes toward the top and bottom of the painting (the ends of the lever extensions). Male vortexes extend up, and female vortexes extend down from the centering cathode planes. The sexes can be distinguished by color: blue-green for the female and red for the male.
Locking points in the wave are revealed in the yellow anode points of gravitative preponderance. The spiral pattern of all movement is depicted in every stroke of this painting. While the painting is alive with movement, it also possesses the elements of serenity and stillness. The background blue color contrasts with the reds and yellows and contributes to the overall effect of soft, powerful, serene movement.

Painting of the Month

The Octave Wave
The Octave Wave oil painting is one of Dr. Russell's most famous pieces. It was painted circa 1921 after Dr. Russell was asked by physicist H.H. Sheldon to create a visible representation of the invisible universe, in order to better explain his cosmogony.
Dr. Russell describes it as such, “These paintings, in full color, were made to illustrate the birth of matter as it emerges from “space”, and its “death” as it is swallowed up by space, for space is its womb, and also its tomb. Its appearance from space is merely its coming within the reach of our senses, likewise its disappearance is the reverse, for its cycle continues beyond our range of sensing, as the cycles of all things do.”

NOVEMBER SCULPTURE OF THE MONTH

Mark Twain Memorial

This sculpture took Dr. Walter Russell 18 months to sculpt. It represents the characters in Mark Twain's four favorite books.
It features the judges from Joan of Arc, The Prince and the Pauper, Huckleberry Finn, Tom Sawyer, and Jim.
The arrangement of the figures is so well balanced, that Mark Twain's son in law, (
Ossip Gabrilowitsch) who was a composer, took a note of music and substituted it for each head. When this was played on the piano, it played a beautiful melody. That shows the rhythmic arrangement of the figures. There is a relationship between mathematics and science, music and the arts.

SCULPTURE OF THE MONTH

The Four Freedoms Monument

The Four Freedoms Monument was sculpted by Walter Russell. It represents the essential freedoms every human being on Earth is entitled to.

This sculpture was commissioned by President Franklin D. Roosevelt following his articulation of the "Four Freedoms" in his 1941 State of the Union Address.
It was created later that year by Russell.

In 1943 it was dedicated before a crowd of 60,000 people at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

It was presented in honor of Colin Kelly. Kelly was a pilot who flew bombing runs against the Japanese navy in the first days after the Pearl Harbor attack. He is remembered as the first American hero to be shot down in combat during World War II, after ordering his crew to bail out shortly before his bomber exploded, killing him. On June 14, 1944, the monument was moved to the former home of Kelly in Madison, Florida.

The Four Fundamental Freedoms are:

  • Freedom of Speech
  • Freedom of Worship
  • Freedom from Want
  • Freedom from Fear

The University of Science and Philosophy

A Message From the President

To those of you who read this message, may I say, I hope it will remind you of the most important thing a human being can discover—the Light of one’s Divine inheritance—the Soul.

There is much focus on the external world today.  In fact, not much has changed in the many thousands of years since the dawn of conscience.  The mystery schools of the ancients taught the Hermetic principles - the Trivium and Quadrivium - the self and the soul.  Despite this modern technological era, many great minds at the very recent turn of the 20th century, reminded us of the importance of the soul, and the continued pursuit of self-unfoldment.  How quickly we get distracted from what may only be termed, “The Great Self-Work.”

Humanity as always, seems more focused on the covers of books than their contents.  Mass-man seeks the perfect unscarred cover to solve the external problems of the world while failing to realize, all man’s ills stem from his internal problems, the greatest being his failure to realize the Divine Light within himself, all beings and life—atom, mineral, vegetable, animal, human and star.  Personally, I am more fascinated by the scarred book cover than the perfect one.  The scars reveal to me, a kind of deep and mysterious character.  Such is the nature of wisdom and God.  It is not to be found on the outside of things, rather in the deepest core.

Consider the words of this master alchemist;
“The vital thing is not the transmutation of metals but that of the experimenter himself. It is an ancient secret that a few people rediscover each century. Unfortunately, only a handful are successful.”  ~Fulcanelli

As the world of mankind navigates the rough waters of his collective storm, it is to ever be remembered that only individuals may rise from the collective, and even then only a handful of individuals rise to become genius or beyond.  The progression of consciousness is a narrow path, and that is why so few choose to knowingly walk it.  For those brave enough to seek the Light of the soul, even as the crowds point to the book covers of the world as the cause of all ills, I salute you.  For indeed, it is the content of one’s character - written on the blank pages of your own unique book that defines YOU.  And the greatest characters have unfolded through conscious awareness of the Divine Light within.  In their soul books, despite any lines of darkness, are eventually written lines of Light as their pursuit toward the mountaintop reveals. And those who read their words are uplifted all the same.

Matt Presti
President
University of Science and Philosophy

P.S.  The University has open enrollment all year-round.  To join the Alumni of the USP, one must purchase and complete the Home Study Course.  There is no course on earth as devoted to unfolding one’s genius and innate inner talents.  It is life changing and timeless wisdom from cover to cover.

Painting of the Month

The Might of Ages
(Oil Painting, 1900)

In Europe, in the first decade of the 20th Century, Walter Russell gained acclaim, medals, and awards for this allegorical masterpiece. It shows the power of the cumulative thought in building a civilization. As you can see the characters go way back into ancient history and they are all looking out to the skyline of New York. Dr. Russell was only 28 years old whenever he painted this, he often went without food just to afford the materials he needed to complete this painting over the course of three years. At first it was not recognized by the American Academy. It wasn't until it was being framed some time later at his dealers that the King of Italy saw this painting and took it to Europe, where it was awarded one of the highest honors ever given to an American artist by King Alfonso of Spain along with 11 other countries where it was displayed in the International Exhibit of 1902. After that, the United States recognized its importance and it was put into history books in school. The Might of Ages is currently on display at The Russell Museum and prints are being sold at the link below!

Dear Reader,

This course of study is written for those who have felt the deep urge within them to know that rare experience known as Cosmic Conscious Illumination, which comes only to those whose inner sensory perception is beginning to unfold. Those who are thus illumined, even if by but a flash of the Cosmic Light, reach the greatest heights of mental exaltation that it is possible for humans to know.

Many thousands in this day and age are on the verge of feeling the awakening of that divine spark of inner vision and inner knowing which sets them to seeking -- seeking they know not what, nor where to look for that "something" that will satisfy their inner longing.

The study course begins with a scientific explanation of meditation, or communion with God, and is followed by a scientific explanation of prayer. Also included is a scientific explanation of Cosmic Consciousness and that rarest of all human experiences know as THE ILLUMINATION.

Our study course is for the purpose of aiding you to make that transition. For this reason the teaching of the power to open the door to the Light of your Self, through an understanding of what meditation means, is paramount and begins the course. The Course is for the purpose of making you know the invisible universe in order to manifest your knowing in the visible universe.

1. Every intense student of our course can become a consummate PHILOSOPHER because the living philosophy of our teachings gives him wisdom and power to control his destiny.

2. He can be a consummate SCIENTIST because he becomes so thoroughly familiar with God's motivative forces and processes that his knowledge gives him the power to command all matter to obey his v.~ll.

3. He can be a consummate DOCTOR and Natural healer, for he knows how God restores balance and normalcy to unbalanced bodies and minds which needlessly fill our hospitals and mental institutions.

4. He can be a consummate LAWYER, for he knows all of Nature's Law of rhythmic balanced interchange from which man builds his principles of justice, symbolized by balanced scales.

5. He can be a consummate LEADER, for his knowledge of Nature's laws and processes gives him command over material forces, and gives him wisdom to command his own destiny, which a leader must have before he can command the destiny of other men.

6. He can become the consummate MATHEMATICIAN, for in his hands he holds the master key to mathematics which lies in the repetitive sequences of the octave wave of nine tones of the wave spectrum that vibrate between the equilibrium zeros which eternally end his nines to begin them again at one.

7 . Or he can become t he consummate POET, MUSICIAN, PAINTER, SCULPTOR, ARCHITECT. ENGINEER, INVENTOR and other genius interpreters of Nature's rhythms and harmonies, that alone lie in the living heartbeat of this universe which is but an infinite multiple of one octave wave.

These also define what we mean by the transformation of the physical man, whose conclusions are drawn from the evidence of his senses, to cosmic man, who knows CAUSE which lies behind the EFFECTS that his senses alone perceive.

Develop Inner Thinking and Creative Expression
While initial study should be done in solitude, families and groups of friends should study this course together and discuss it together, for by such interchange each one helps the other. Children of families should be "reared" upon this new cosmic knowledge. It will make greater men and women of them by developing their inner thinking and creative expression.

The new Russell Museum at 518 W. Main St. in downtown Waynesboro held a festive grand opening on November 1, followed by a Homecoming Conference titled “The Power of Mind in Action.” 170 local dignitaries, residents, and University of Science and Philosophy members gathered for speeches, gallery tours, live music including bagpipe, harp, and violin, wine from Barren Ridge Vineyard, hors-d’oeuvres by Franklin’s Catering, and a fundraising auction of Russell memorabilia such as signed books, miniatures, art replicas, and a recorded lecture series from the 1950s.

“I do this in the spirit of raising consciousness, which this planet so desperately needs,” said chairman of the board and president emeritus Michael P. Hudak before cutting the ribbon to officially open the new museum. “Our mission is to contribute to the uplift of humanity as a whole,” added current USP president Matthew Presti. “As Nature expresses God to Man, so Man expresses God through Art.”
