NOVEMBER SCULPTURE OF THE MONTH

Mark Twain Memorial

This sculpture took Dr. Walter Russell 18 months to sculpt. It represents the characters in Mark Twain's four favorite books.
It features the judges from Joan of Arc, The Prince and the Pauper, Huckleberry Finn, Tom Sawyer, and Jim.
The arrangement of the figures is so well balanced, that Mark Twain's son in law, (
Ossip Gabrilowitsch) who was a composer, took a note of music and substituted it for each head. When this was played on the piano, it played a beautiful melody. That shows the rhythmic arrangement of the figures. There is a relationship between mathematics and science, music and the arts.
